Dark Iron Dwarf Alliance Symbol Inspired by World of Warcraft

Dark Iron Dwarf Alliance Symbol

What would the Dark Iron Dwarves from World of Warcraft Alliance symbol look like? I spent a lot of time in character creation thinking about this. Their molten appearance really spoke to me. Dwarves are always creators, tinkerers but them being part of the very metal they work with is interesting.

To me, their Alliance symbol had to be full of lava and molten stones.

I spent a lot of time practicing drawing rocks. You would think that rocks would be easy to draw (or at least that was what I thought) it is not... I must have drawn 20-30 before I was ready to start working on this.

I ended up really enjoying drawing rocks because of this. It seems so funny to say but they are really interesting. With the deep groves, jagged cut marks, sharp angles, and depth in how the lava cools and leaves so many layers. It is amazing how something so simple can be so interesting.

If I redid this piece I would definitely make some changes. The Alliance symbol doesn't come through as pronounced as I wanted because of the way the lava ebbs and flows. I would have the lava become darker and cooler on the edges to make the Alliance symbol really pop. I practiced the rocks a lot more than I practiced the lava and because of that it doesn't move like I had envisioned.

This piece helped me learn and grow. Not only as an artist but also with a fear of mine, volcanos. I watched a history channel show on super volcanos and ever since I had been afraid of them. The sheer devastation and abruptness shook me to my core and haunted me. Drawing this was a huge step out of my comfort zone. It helped me refocus on the beauty of lava and how volcanos create as well. New islands, pathways, and lakes, all form because of them and that is truly amazing.
